PERSONAL REPERTOIRE
Vocalists should develop personal repertoire, while developing an awareness of a variety of instrumentalists and vocalists for further study.
Guidelines for Choosing Repertoire:
1) Memorize and perform 4-8 tunes:
Tune 1: Jazz Standard (from The Jazz Standards, Gioia) (Refer to Tunes Lists)
Tune 2: Folk Tune (from Anthology of American Folk Music, Smith) (Refer to Tunes Lists)
Tune 3: Blues or Rhythm Changes
Tune 4-8: any other American improvised music: modal, bebop, hard bop, fusion,
R&B, pop, rock, alternative, etc.
2) Choose varied styles: swing, Latin/Brazilian, ballad, ECM, R&B, funk, etc.
3) Choose varied tempos. Common tempos include slow (70-100 bpm), medium (100-
160 bpm), medium-up (150-230 bpm). *More advanced tempos include very slow
(0-70 bpm), up (230-300 bpm), and breakneck (300-400 bpm).
4) Choose repertoire that represents various decades and eras.
5) Create a tatement of Rationale and Interpretation (1 page) and Speech (30 seconds) to accompany the jazz standard and folk tune (minimum requirement). (Refer to Rationale & Speech)
6) Add the repertoire to a tune journal. (Refer to Journals)
7) Keep a weekly listening journal. (Refer to Journals)
